Sunday, Roman ruins, getting lost, looking silly

Sunday we took a walk over to Muncaster Castle, stopping off on the way at the Roman bath house on the edge of Ravenglass (there used to be a whole massive Roman fort on the beach, but the bath house is all that's left). This alcove would have held a statue of a goddess, apparently, which Cloud took as her cue for a pose.

The sea! We walked uphill through a wood, turned back towards the coast, and could suddenly see the Irish Sea for the first time, rather than just the opposite bank of mud. I love the blue haze at the horizon here; I'm reading an awesome book which discusses "the blue of distance", and this is it exactly.

Turning to the right (north, I think), you can see the village here, where we walked up from, between the wood and the beach. Photographs are too narrow to do justice to the amazing view from this hillside. We stood there gawping for 20 minutes before we could keep walking.

Looks like rain, doesn't it? Amazingly we stayed dry, but the rubbish directions in our book of walks sent us completely the wrong way across this hillside and we had to fall back on our long experience as hardcore walkers and instinctive feel for the lay of the land. And we weren't faffing about for hours at all... no, really... honest. Ahem. Oooh look – you can see Sellafield in the distance!

And for a view from above... this map shows you how the rivers link up and why we had to get way up here to be able to see out to sea.

When you are lost in a strange land and slightly delirious from mild dehydration, there's nothing to help you find your bearings and remedy your ailments like, er, carrying a big stick. Realising how daft I looked carrying a big stick, Cloud did me the great favour of taking this photo to show the whole world.

Safe and well back at the B&B for a final night of intense relaxation. Ravenglass is a place where nothing much has ever happened, and nothing much continues to happen even now, which makes it a very wonderful destination if you need to clear out your head a bit, which we did, and it worked pretty well. Yeah.
