Happy Being Me

This was quite a nice easy song to write, cos I was standing in my bedroom noodling around on the guitar when I came up with the music, and just started singing dummy words to hang the tune on, and the phase "I'm happy being me" just popped into my head for the chorus, and I thought: actually, that's not a bad idea for something to write a song about, cos I AM quite happy being me, as it goes.

When I was young and a typical Smiths fan
I used to put my hair in a quiff
then I got into The Cure and did a backcomb
to look like Robert Smith

I did whatever it took to join the cool scenes
(and I despised LSD)
but when you get a bit older you can just say:
the scenes can fit around me

and

I'm happy being me
I'm happy being me.

Today I sat in the pub with my best friend
discussing bisexuality
and all the time we were talking, I was watching
the FA Cup on TV

that's when my friend said:
strange combination!
I said:

I'm happy being me
I'm happy being me.
