The Day of the Popshow

And we were on a train, stuck
somewhere in the middle of nowhere
We hadn't moved for half an hour
I said we should've stayed home in bed
You said, well, no:
if we had then we'd miss this popshow
And we'd still be stuck
we'd just be stuck at home

So we stayed on the train, well,
not that we had any option
We made ourselves as empty as
the winter fields that spread out for miles
And when we got to go
we saw half an amazing popshow
And we felt really sorry
for everyone stuck at home

I said, don't ever change
One thing has to stay the same
And I want it to be us
She said, don't talk that way
People never stay the same
The wheels, they just keep rolling on

There's always times when we'll get stuck
somewhere in the middle of nowhere
It might be on a train, or
it might be somewhere inside ourselves
or inside you
and when there's nothing at all you can do
you just have to try and do nothing
the best you can

She said, don't ever change
One thing has to stay the same
And I want it to be us
I said, don't talk that way
Nothing ever stays the same
The wheels, they just keep rolling on

And on some misty platform
when these bones are too old for dancing
we might lament the winter fields,
might weep as we meet for the last time
But we will know
we had fun before we had to go
and the chill will be kept at bay
by an old warm glow.
